President’s Report

Hello fellow bridge players! I hope that you are staying safe and healthy while we manage through this pandemic.

Last week our District 6 Board of Directors met to elect our new BoD Officers who will assume their new roles on September 1, 2020.

President’s Report

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic, we had canceled the Reston and Baltimore Regionals. Now that ACBL has canceled all face-to-face tournaments for the balance of the year, our November Chesapeake Regional tournament in Cambridge, MD has also been canceled. We are disappointed as I am sure many of you are, that we will not be face-to-face as a district until next year, assuming the pandemic is behind us then.

In the meantime, we hope you are enjoying the online BBO Virtual Club games that support our game owners and local directors. This weekend, June 20 & 21 is the annual “The Longest Day” fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association with virtual games on Saturday and Sunday. Please support the ALZ by playing in your local virtual games to raise money for this important charity. Lastly, there will be an online virtual BBO Regional tournament on Thursday through Sunday, June 25-28.  Find all the details by signing into BBO and look for the information in the Messages tab on the right.

Stay safe and healthy and enjoy your summer!

Social Distancing Recommendations And D6 Impacts

I hope you are safe at home following the CDC, and ACBL recommendations to practice social distancing by remaining in your homes.

Yesterday the CDC guideline to remain in your home was extended until April 30.  The ACBL guideline is May 11.  Because of these recommendations, all events in District 6 will be canceled through May 11.  Therefore, the following events are canceled:

  • All unit club games
  • The GNT events, originally scheduled for April 18-19, are canceled and tentatively rescheduled for August 29-30
  • The April 30-May 3 Fairfax Sectional is canceled
  • The May 1-3 Virginia Beach Sectional is canceled
  • The May 4-10 D6 STaC games are canceled, but may be rescheduled

Please check your club, unit and the District 6 website for the latest information.

Thank you and stay safe!

President’s Report

Fall is finally here and with it comes cooler air, much needed rain, and our last regional in District 6 (D6) for the year–the Chesapeake Regional in Cambridge, MD, beginning November 11th. We look forward to installing this year’s new D6 Goodwill Committee members at the Chesapeake Regional.

The year has flown by and so much has happened! Perhaps most importantly, I call your attention to the announcement of the new location for our Baltimore, MD Regional next August, at the Baltimore Hilton Inner Harbor. See the announcement below my report.

A big thank you to Shawn Stringer and David Rodney who diligently worked to find this fabulous location when the contract with Hunt Valley could not be continued. Also, another “BIG Thank You” to our D6 friend and corporate sponsor, Krauss Investment Group, for working with us to make parking free for all attendees at the Hilton.

The time has come to say goodbye to our long-time bridge friend Will Williams who has moved to Honolulu, Hawaii. Will served in many roles both in the Richmond Unit and at the District level. Also, for many years, Will served as our representative on the ACBL Board of Governors. Will and his late partner Jack Buchanan were recently elected to the Richmond Unit Hall of Fame. Will promises to visit us regularly in D6. Aloha Will!

Your D6 Board of Directors continues to work on opportunities for improvement within D6 and within the ACBL. Before the end of the year, you will receive the Calendar of Events postcard for the first half of 2020.

I look forward to seeing all of you in Cambridge, MD!

It Takes A Village

Summer is in full swing and the Richmond and Reston Regionals were a lot of fun thanks to all the volunteers who work very hard to deliver our tournaments. Up next is Hunt Valley (Aug 12) and Chesapeake (Nov 11). Continue reading…

Make plans now to attend the Chesapeake Regional in November

Thank you for participating in our Regional Tournaments this year in Richmond and Reston, VA and Hunt Valley, MD.  Coming up is our Chesapeake Regional in Cambridge, MD, November 11-17. We hope to see all of you at this beautiful site on the Eastern Shore.

New Regional Schedule of Events

In response to your feedback, we have changed our Regional main events schedule (Knock Outs, Swiss Teams and Gold Rush Pairs) to morning and afternoon, Tuesday through Sunday, with Fast Pairs and Zip Swiss in the evening. Note that the games on Monday are at 1:30 and 7:30. We tried this new schedule in Hunt Valley last August, and our table count was up, so we hope that was an indication that you like the change! We will monitor your feedback and table counts to judge the success of the new schedule. Please check the Regional flyers for each tournament for complete schedules.
