District 6 North American Pairs Competition – 2023/2024



The District Six North American Pairs Finals for Flight B and the NLM Flight were held September 30-October 1, 2023.

Congratulations to Flight B winners Tom and Janet McGlynn, who will be representing District 6 at the March 2024 NABC along with Jim Dickson and Najedja Drenska, Alan Munro and Colin Schloss, and Tom Peters and Ernie Schuler.

Congratulations to our NLM Flight winners Elliott Bernold and Jacob Baron, who will be representing District 6 at the March 2024 NABC along with Mark Valavanis and Robert Robinson, Ed Johnson and Ken Iobst, and Muhammad Zaidi and Stephen Collier.


The District 6 Finals for the Open Flight were held face-to-face November 11-12, 2023.

Congratulations to our Open Flight Winners – Jay Kelkar and Deb Dhar. Finishing 2nd were Andy Gofreed and Alan Tenenbaum, and finishing 3rd were David Genne and Sven Pride. These three pairs will represent our District at the NABC in Louisville, KY in March 2024.

Chicago NABC July 12-23, 2023

Congratulations to our Flight A Grand National Team of Weizhong Bao, Huailin Chen, Jim Zhong, and Jian-Ping Chen who finished 3/4 in a tough event.

Congratulations to Hal Hindman and Clyde Kruskal who finished 3rd in the Wernher Open Pairs and to Steve Robinson and Mark Dahl who finished 7th in the same event.

Congratulations to Eric Gettleman and Paul Holmes who finished 1st in the 0-10000 Pairs on July 16.

Amended D6 COVID Policy

  ***IMPORTANT INFORMATION***

In accordance with recently revised ACBL policy, District 6 has opted to amend its Covid protocols for the Richmond Regional in May 2023: 

District 6 will not require proof of Covid vaccination at the Richmond Regional in May.
District 6 will announce our Covid vaccination policy for our upcoming Reston and Baltimore Regionals within the coming month.

Masks will not be required in Richmond unless requested by opponents who are both wearing masks or unless the community transmission rate becomes high.

DISTRICT 6 WINNERS AT NEW ORLEANS NABC MARCH 8-19, 2023

Congratulations to Greg Humphreys and Jenni Carmichael who won the Rockwell Mixed Pairs, and to Greg Humphreys and Adam Parrish who finished 3rd in the very difficult and prestigious Kay Platinum Pairs event.

Congratulations to James Fox, Judy Fox, Maximo Crusizio and Rodrigo Garcia Da Rosa who won the NABC 10,000 KO Teams event. Congratulations to Monique Smith, Dennis Thompson, Bharat Rao, and Himanshu Joshi who finished 4th in the 0-10,000 Swiss Teams competition.

Sad News – Passing of Unit 139 President David Butler

A memorial service for David Butler was held at 2:30 pm, March 26, 2023 at Grace Episcopal, 5607 Gordonsville Rd, Keswick VA.

The bridge world has lost a fine gentleman, an outstanding player, and a friend to many. David Butler, President of Unit 139 since 2015, passed away suddenly on November 13, 2022. I first played with Dave in 1975, and after our first session, in which we had a 73% game, we looked at one another and said, “We should play again.” We did so, for 35 years. He combined a keen, analytical mind with poker skills that made him unflappable and unreadable at the table. He is perhaps the finest player who never finished first in an open North American Bridge Championships (NABC) event. Among his achievements were finishing second in the 2007 Senior Swiss, partnered by Jeff Hand, making the semifinals of the Grand National Teams in 2004, fourth and seventh in the North American Open Pairs, fifth in the Nail Life Master Pairs, fifth in the Mitchell BAM, and over one hundred Blue Ribbon qualifications. Most importantly, as a quiet country gentleman, David was my dear and patient friend.
